Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the SSERC annual Celebration Event on the 18th of September, where I met some truly remarkable young people taking part in the Research Placement & Experiences Programme.

Over the summer, 45 learners from 17 local authorities across Scotland took part in this fantastic initiative, gaining hands-on experience in STEM workplaces, working on in-depth research projects, and developing the skills and confidence that will carry them into bright futures.

Many of the participants will be the first in their families to consider university, and it’s clear that this programme has been truly transformative for them. Their passion, curiosity, and dedication were on full display and I was honoured to present their Certificates of Achievement.

It was especially exciting to see the link with the Young STEM Leader Programme, giving learners the opportunity to work towards a STEM Leader Level 7 Award while developing crucial leadership skills.

A huge congratulations to all the young people involved, especially Oghenekome Lisa Oniko from Braidhurst High School in Motherwell on her work with COWI UK Ltd., and a heartfelt thank you to SSERC, the mentors, and everyone supporting this important work. Scotland’s future in STEM is in very capable hands!
