ADAMSON ENCOURAGING MOTHERWELL AND WISHAW SCHOOL PUPILS TO TAKE PART
Clare Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, is encouraging young people to take part in the national primary school joke competition.

Ms Adamson is proud to support VoiceBox, a Scotland-wide joke-telling competition for pupils in P1-P7, organised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). The competition aims to highlight the importance of communication while bringing fun and creativity to classrooms across the country.
Schools are invited to nominate pupils with the funniest jokes, giving them the chance to be selected as one of 32 local authority finalists who will be invited to the National Final at the Scottish Parliament on Thursday, 5th June.
Finalists will receive £100 worth of HarperCollins books, while the pupils with the top three jokes will win a toy gift card worth up to £100 and up to £500 worth of Collins Big Cat books for their school.
The RCSLT – the professional body for speech and language therapists – hopes the competition will bring confidence and joy to young participants.
Ms Adamson said:
“VoiceBox is a fantastic idea. It’s about raising awareness of the importance of communication skills in children’s development.
“The RCSLT support speech and language therapists across the UK. Speech and language therapists provide treatment, and invaluable support, and care for children and adults with communication difficulties or eating, drinking and swallowing problems.
“Most people take our ability to communicate for granted and it is right that we promote the important work of Speech and Language Therapists. Their work is life-changing for people with communication difficulties.
“VoiceBox allows us to recognise and promote that work in a fun and engaging way and to showcase the creativity and humour of the pupils taking part.
“I have written to local schools in Motherwell and Wishaw to get them involved. I’ve also recommended a book about anti-gravity; it’s impossible to put down.
“I have no doubt that the kids will come up with a better entry than that! And I wish all the participants the very best of luck. I know the talented pupils in Motherwell and Wishaw will give a good showing!”
Head of RCSLT Scotland, Glenn Carter, said: “The VoiceBox competition is a fun way to remind everyone that communication is a vital skill for every child.
“In every classroom, there are children who need additional support with speaking and understanding. With the right help, including from speech and language therapists, these children can achieve significant improvements in their learning, interaction skills, and overall wellbeing.
“Communication is fundamental to how we connect with others, understand the world, and express ourselves. Every child has a right to be heard and supported in developing these skills.”
